Boxer who Anthony Joshua got last win against to face former UFC champion

The last man to be defeated by Anthony Joshua has confirmed his next fight for 2022 – against former UFC star Junior dos Santos.

Back in December 2020, Joshua, 32, took on Bulgarian heavyweight Kubrat Pulev with his WBA, IBF, WBO, and IBO world titles on the line.

Pulev, 40, was nothing if not resistant, surviving being knocked down three times before finally succumbing in the ninth round when 'AJ' connected with a stinging right hand to score a knockout victory.

Joshua however, has since lost his belts following a unanimous points defeat against Oleksandr Usyk in September, and while the British fighter is currently negotiating a rematch with the Ukrainian, Pulev's next fight won't be inside a boxing ring.

Last November, Pulev delved into the new concept of Triad Combat, which incorporates boxing and MMA rules, and started his new venture in style by defeating Frank Mir via TKO in less than two minutes.

The rules of Triad, with fights lasting a maximum of seven two-minute rounds, allow any kind of punch, including spinning back fists. However, elbows, knees and kicks are all banned. The official rulebook reads: "All punches from all positions and angles which land on legal targets are allowed in Triad combat."

And now 'The Cobra', a two-time European heavyweight champion who also unsuccessfully challenged Wladimir Klitschko for the world title in 2014, has agreed in principle to enter a triangular ring again and fight dos Santos in early 2022, with the event promoted by Triller Fight Club.

The Brazilian legend, a former UFC heavyweight champion, was released by the company in March this year having won 21 of his 30 professional MMA fights.

This summer, he made appearances on the All Elite Wrestling promotion, but has long expressed a desire to crossover into boxing.

And now mmafighting.com has reported that while the full details of his clash with Pulev are yet to be finalised, the bout is expected to take place in February – with an details of the date, location, and undercard to be confirmed.

Dos Santos, 37, has recently joined up with veteran manager Ali Abdelaziz, who is currently still working with a host of high-profile UFC names including Khabib Nurmagomedov, Justin Gaethje, Kamaru Usman, and Henry Cejudo.
