Daniel Cormier confirmed his retirement after suffering a points defeat to Stipe Miocic in their highly anticipated heavyweight title bout at UFC 252 in Las Vegas.
The two fighters were facing off for a third time to decide in many people’s eyes the best heavyweight in UFC history.
Champion Miocic came into the fight defending against former two-division champ Cormier, who was looking to regain his crown.
Cormier hinted before the fight that he would be retiring from the sport, regardless of the result, and the American confirmed this moments after his loss.
Speaking to Joe Rogan shortly after his defeat, Cormier said: “It sucks. Being on the losing end of two fights in a trilogy is a very sad fight to be in, but I will deal with it.
“But this will be it for me, I’ve had a long run and just fought a great fight but this will be it.
“I only want to fight in title fights and I don’t believe I will be fighting in them any longer.”
Cormier showed massive resilience against Miocic, especially after having suffered a bad eye injury when he was accidentally poked in the socket by his opponent.
“I can’t see anything out of my left eye, its black. It is what it is. I just can’t see but whatever,” added Cormier.
Cormier ended Miocic's record run of three straight heavyweight title defenses in their first meeting in 2018, and Miocic regained the title from Cormier last year.
UFC president Dana White said before the fight that it will determine the greatest heavyweight in UFC history.
Rogan, who commentated on the fight, said it was tough to see his friend lose in the way he did but praised Miocic for his performance.
“Stipe but on a tremendous performance and deserved to win the title,” he said.
“It is really hard seeing DC walk out of there only being able to see out of one eye.
“But Stipe did exactly what he did in the season fight and he had Cormier badly hurt.
“Ultimately, what we were dealing with is a fantastic wrestler but DC isn’t really a heavyweight.
“Miocic is a proper heavyweight and has now just been confirmed as the greatest of all time.”
