Daniel Dubois on how sister Caroline can become boxing’s next big female star

Daniel Dubois is hoping for a delightful double for the family this weekend.

That means him getting back to winning ways against Bogdan Dinu on Saturday night and sister Caroline booking a place at this summer's Olympics.

Dubois, 23, faces the Romanian in his return to the ring for the first time since his November defeat by Joe Joyce.

While over in Paris, his younger sister heads into the final qualifier for Tokyo 2020 needing two wins to book her place on the plane to Japan.

The 20-year-old highly-rated amateur lightweight will first face Finn and World No 2 Mira Potkonen on Friday.

“That's a big one, Caroline has got to qualify,” said Dubois.

“It is all set for the Olympics, this is it and what she has been preparing for her whole career.

“I don't think the expectation affects her, she has tunnel vision.

“She wants to be successful, she wants to reward herself by winning the gold.

“She is not going for anything less than the best. I know that is what her mindset is going to be.”

Dubois will be in Telford today [FRIDAY] weighing in ahead of his 17th professional fight.

He is a heavy favourite to deal with Dinu in his comeback bout but the pressure is on after his first career defeat late last year.

He is also back in the ring after suffering two fractures to his left eye socket in that loss.

If he didn't turn pro as a teenager, Dubois could be out in France with his sister pushing for an Olympic place.

But he has no regrets as he plots his own path while he predicts his sibling can become the next superstar female fighter and follow in the footsteps of Irish ace Katie Taylor.

“It will be massive to have an Olympian in the family,” said Dubois.

“She will do what I never did and what many athletes want to do and bring back that gold.

“This is the pinnacle for amateur athletes. To bring that back then she is a superstar.

“I do wonder a bit that I could be going to Tokyo.

“Maybe things wouldn't have turned out the way they did. I don't ever want to look back, I'm the man of the future.

“I don't ponder on the past and what could have been too long. I look to the future and what is here and now.

“But I definitely think the next superstar has to be Caroline. She is exciting and fights as good as any guy boxer out there.”
