Jake Paul has claimed that he has officially retired from boxing following his split decision victory over Tyron Woodley in his fourth professional bout.
Pau, 24, was eager to discuss potential match-ups with the likes of Conor McGregor, Nate Diaz and Tommy Fury in the aftermath of his biggest scalp to date in Cleveland, Ohio.
Woodley, a former UFC champion, has been viewed as a stepping stone to bigger and sterner tests for Paul, who has long campaigned for a mega-fight with Conor McGregor.
Jake Paul has claimed he has retired from boxing after his win over Tyron Woodley
The 24-year-old informed his four million Twitter followers of his decision on Monday
The Irishman tweeted ‘salivating’ in a damning rebuke of Paul’s performance, while Diaz and Fury both angled for a fight with the boxing novice in the wake of the eight-round contest on Sunday.
However, Paul has taken to Twitter to announce his retirement from boxing. The American tweeted: ‘Updated status: Retired boxer’ to his four million followers on Monday.
It remains to be seen whether Paul commits to his retirement claim, given that he had previously labelled Canelo Alvarez as his dream opponent and that he will eventually become a world champion.
Paul has been accused of adopting promotional tactics utilised by McGregor and this move appears a carbon copy of the Irishman’s retirement claims. McGregor has ‘retired’ three times, only to later make a return to the UFC.
The move comes as a surprise with Paul teasing fights with Tommy Fury and Conor McGregor
Paul had said he needs to ‘chill out’ having committed his life to boxing over 18 months
Paul had teased a rematch with Woodley, demanding that the former UFC star get an ‘I love Jake Paul’ tattoo in order to seal a rematch. However, the 24-year-old later added that he is considering taking a break from the sport.
‘We’ll see. I’ve been boxing for 18 months now. I haven’t been to the dentist, I haven’t got my hair cut in two years,’ he said. ‘My teeth are crooked, my nose is crooked.
‘I might need to chill out for a second, I’m only 24. I’m changing and growing a lot, I’m making mistakes. I’m going to get back to the gym when I’m ready. I didn’t fight my best tonight. I gave myself a C minus.’
