Tiger Woods paired with friend Justin Thomas at PNC Championship: A look into their friendship

Tiger Woods and his son Charlie will play with Justin Thomas and his dad Mike during the first round of the 2021 PNC Championship.

The Woodses and Thomases are actually very close, so this pairing will probably feel normal for them. Thomas and Woods played together for the first time back in 2017 at the Hero World Challenge. The now 28-year-old Thomas has looked up to 45-year-old Woods most of his life, as have most young golfers, and their now friendship is something Thomas and Woods both cherish.

In a recent interview with Golf Digest, Woods’ first since his severe car crash back in February, Woods spoke about how grateful he is for his friendship with Thomas.

“The Thomases and the Woodses are like family,” Woods said. “JT is like the brother I never had, and Charlie is like the little brother that JT never had.”

Thomas stayed in close contact with Woods after his crash. Thomas often was the person who would speak to the media about any Woods updates he had. Now that Woods is returning to golf, Thomas says he’s “pumped.”

“My excitement level is high just for him being out here and being somewhere other than his house and getting to see a lot of familiar faces. And I know spending time with Charlie is a huge deal to him. So, I know he’s excited for that part,” Justin Thomas said, via Golfweek. “In terms of the competing, I think his expectations are very low. But at the same time, he is who he is for a reason, so I’m sure he’ll be pissed off if he didn’t play well.”

The Thomases are the PNC Championship reigning champions heading into this year’s tournament, so that will put some extra pressure on the Woodses. Thomas admitted that him and his dad wore their PNC Championship belts to the Woods’ house on Christmas last year.

But, not just Tiger and Justin hang out. Mike, who continues to coach Justin throughout his professional career, is now coaching Charlie as he begins his young career.

Mike played with the Woodses last week as well, and he was shocked with how well Tiger was playing. This is Tiger’s first golf outing since his February crash, so as Thomas said, the expectations aren’t necessarily high. But, golf fans are excited to hear how well Tiger is doing.

“It’s crazy how good [Tiger]’s hitting it and far he’s hitting for what he’s been through,” Mike said, via Golf.com. “Well, both, but Tiger has been through a lot more than Charlie. It’s impressive where he’s at.”
