Patrick Mahomes’ mother, Randi, may have been wise to put her phone out of reach during Super Bowl 55.
Instead, Randi went viral for the second time in a month for her tweet criticizing the officiating in the Chiefs’ 31-9 loss to the Buccaneers on Sunday night.
Directing a tweet at Tom Brady’s wife, Gisele Bundchen, Randi wrote, “If you have the ref on your team is that really winning!!!”
Randi may have had a bit of a case. The Chiefs were called for 11 accepted penalties that totaled 120 penalty yards, while the Buccaneers saw just four flags against them accepted for 39 total yards.
A couple of the game’s biggest moments, all in favor of the Buccaneers, featured penalties. First, there was the second-quarter drive that the Chiefs’ defense twice got stops before being foiled by penalties both times. Brady took advantage of the extra chances to throw a 17-yard touchdown to Rob Gronkowski.
Later in the second quarter, Kansas City was called for a long pass interference penalty and then another interferece on a ball that appeared uncatchable. Those two DPIs let Brady throw another TD, this one to Antonio Brown from a yard out, just before halftime. Tampa Bay went into the break up 21-6.
In the end, though, it was more than penalties that cost Mahomes and the Chiefs. The lack of protection for the superstar quarterback, who was forced to scramble all over the field, was a major issues, as were crucial drops by Kansas City pass-catchers.
Before the tweet directed at Bundchen, Randi tweeted three separate times about the officiating just in the first half of Super Bowl 55. A few weeks ago, she took to Twitter to criticize Cleveland’s Mack Wilson for the hit that concussed Mahomes in the divisional round.
Mothers everywhere can likely relate, to an extent, to the emotions Randi has felt in these moments. She might do best to keep them off Twitter, though.
