Columbus Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella was fined $25,000 by the NHL for his conduct during media availability after Game 5 of their first-round series, the league announced Tuesday.
After the Blue Jackets were ousted by the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-4 on Aug. 19, a frustrated Tortorella sat for two questions at the postgame news conference, which was conducted over Zoom, then abruptly left.
A reporter asked Tortorella how he felt about his players' experience in the league's quarantine bubble in Toronto.
Tortorella responded: "You know what, guys? I’m not going to get into the touchy-feely stuff and the moral victories and all that. You guys be safe.”
He then got up and left.
The NHL said the fine is the collection of a conditional fine assessed Jan. 1.
Tortorella has been fined $162,000 during his NHL coaching career, which has spanned nearly 20 years, according to The Athletic's Aaron Portzline.
