Max Verstappen has sensationally claimed he would have already sewn up the F1 world championship if he was driving Lewis Hamilton’s car. The 2021 F1 championship comes to a dramatic end on Sunday with Verstappen and Hamilton neck-and-neck on points.

It’s a straight shoot-out with whoever finishes in front of the other being crowned this year’s champion.

Hamilton has been in this position for several years now and has the experience to understand what he needs to do.

Verstappen is a novice in this part of the season though in terms of battling for a championship.

Despite being just 24 years of age, the Dutchman has already competed in seven seasons.

He’s slowly made progress up the driver’s standings, but he finds himself in new territory this year with Red Bull providing a car capable of challenging Mercedes.

The Silver Arrows have dominated F1 over the past few years, with rival teams unable to truly challenge.

Hamilton has taken full advantage in that timeframe and is on the verge of history with an eighth world championship on the line.

Verstappen though had held the advantage for several months before Hamilton’s run of three consecutive wins heading into Abu Dhabi.

Neutral F1 fans are abuzz with excitement on what to expect in the season finale, but Verstappen insists he would have already got the job done if he were driving a Mercedes.

In an interview with Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, Verstappen was asked whether he believes he’s a better driver than Hamilton.

He said: “I think you should be like that if you’re a Formula 1 driver. So I say yes, absolutely!

“But I don’t need to hear that from anyone else. I don’t need that recognition.

“I find it much more important what I think myself, and what the people who are close to me think.

“If I had been in his car, the season would have been decided long ago.”

Verstappen secured pole on Saturday with Hamilton unable to match his championship rival.

But both Mercedes and Red Bull are taking in different strategies into Sunday’s race with Verstappen starting on the soft compound while Hamilton will start on the mediums.
