Former Holland and Chelsea midfielder Ruud Gullit has waded into the hot topic of the epic Formula One battle for supremacy between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton.

The intensity of the fierce fight moved up a notch after the seven-time champion won the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix last weekend following a controversy-filled race.

The race was marred by a collision between the title rivals, which Verstappen received a 10-second penalty for, enabling the Brit to move level on points ahead of the season finale this weekend.

F1 title rivals collided again last weekend to set up thrilling finale in Abu Dhabi this weekend

The dramatic race has dominated the headlines this week and Dutch football legend Gullit has given his take on the rivalry, comparing the race for the championship to the FA Cup.

‘I follow the newspapers in England and the Netherlands and it reminds me of football. One says something about this, the other about that,’ Gullit told his 561,000 Instagram followers.

‘Take playing in the FA Cup in England. There you get nothing for free when you play as a Premier League team against a team from a lower division.

‘Hamilton has a better car than Verstappen, so that is comparable. They both fight for what they’re worth.

‘But Max has to do more, has to get physical, to beat Hamilton. That happens in the FA Cup too.’

The title will be decided by a mouth-watering one-race shootout at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this weekend.

Sportsmail revealed earlier today that Channel 4 are in talks with Sky Sports over showing live coverage of Hamilton’s world title showdown with Max Verstappen on Sunday.
