Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp had backed the decision not to bring in further defensive reinforcements this summer but the German may have to now change his plan.
Virgil van Dijk suffered a major injury against Everton and Joe Gomez is now set for a spell on the sidelines.
He has suffered an injury in England training, believed to be a serious one, leaving Klopp very light in defence.
Joel Matip is the only recognised senior centre-back, meaning Klopp may wish to be busy in the January transfer window.
And Daily Star Sport have looked at five potential options that the Reds boss may be looking at…
It will probably take big money but a move for Napoli star Kalidou Koulibaly could be a wise one for the Reds.
He would slot straight into the heart of the defence, and potentially be first-choice alongside Van Dijk even when Gomez returns.
Manchester City and Manchester United have also been linked with Koulibaly though City signed Ruben Dias in the summer and could leave the door open to the Reds.

Tipped by Mark Lawrenson as “ready-made” for a move to Anfield, Conor Coady has regularly impressed at Wolves.
That Premier League experience could be a key factor in any decision Klopp makes with Coady being a well-known Liverpool fan.
Indeed, he came through the youth ranks at Anfield before leaving for Huddersfield Town in 2014 and would relish a move back.
Georginio Wijnaldum gives fiery response to being asked about Liverpool contract situation
RB Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano has plenty of big-game experience, helping his side to the Champions League semi-finals last season.
He has plenty of ability in the air and impresses with his anticipation of passes.
Upamecano was also among the continent’s top defenders for successful pressing last campaign – something that will certainly please Klopp.
Liverpool's hand may have been turned over whether Virgil van Dijk replacement is needed
Tottenham have also been linked with a move for Inter Milan ace Milan Skriniar, who has fallen out of favour at the San Siro.
He was valued at £54m over the summer, though that could potentially be negotiated given his lack of game-time this season.
Liverpool possibly have an advantage over Tottenham given their lack of major spending in recent years, and Skriniar could be a star for a number of seasons still.

Liverpool have been linked with Ozan Kabak though could now be more tempted than ever with Sport Bild claiming that Schalke could accept around £23m (€25m) for their defender.
It’s reported that finances are tight at Schalke and they have decided to put Kabak ‘in the shop window’.
Turkish star Kabak has impressed in the Bundesliga and was previously managed by Klopp's close associate David Wagner, meaning the German had the inside track on the young defender.
