Achraf Hakimi has etched his name into Moroccan football folklore as one of the heroes of the country’s memorable 2022 World Cup run in Qatar. Tonight, he battles for a spot in Sunday’s final against reigning world champions France, a nation to which he has more than one close tie.

Morocco have been the surprise package of the winter tournament, first topping Group F undefeated, beating Belgium and Canada after an opening draw with Croatia. Walid Regragui’s then stunned Spain on penalties before sending Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal home with a 1-0 quarter-final triumph.

Hakimi has played a role in an unbelievable defensive effort, with Morocco conceding just one goal so far – an own-goal in their victory over Canada. A repeated performance would go a long way in achieving their most impressive feat yet in the Middle East in tonight’s semi at the Al Bayt Stadium.

The 24-year-old is predominantly known for his impressive exploits at right-back for Morocco, Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan and PSG. But plenty of his fans and admirers will be unfamiliar with his wife, glamorous actress Hiba Abouk.

Abouk is a popular actress of Libyan and Tunisian descent and met Hakimi in 2018 while he played for Dortmund. The 36-year-old was born in Madrid like her footballing husband, who started his career in the Spanish capital after Real scouted him as he played for his local team CD Colonia Ofigevi aged seven.

Hakimi’s career accelerated during his two-year loan stint in Germany from 2018 to 2020, and his early relationship with Abouk featured regular long-distance travel across Europe before she permanently moved to Dortmund. The couple married in 2020 and welcomed their first son, Amin, in the same year before having a second baby boy earlier this year.

Abouk has revealed her romance with Hakimi is fuelled by ‘representing Arab culture’ with ‘a mutual sense of admiration and respect’. They both starred on the cover of Vogue Arabia in October and now live in Paris after he completed a £61million move from Inter to PSG in July 2021.

He will face his best friend and club team-mate Kylian Mbappe in a highly-anticipated duel down the flank when Morocco and France clash in Qatar. And his stock would erupt further if he played a significant role in the Africans reaching the final against Lionel Messi and Argentina.
