Arsenal awarded penalty after Danny Rose produces clothesline from hell

Arsenal were gifted a penalty in the first-half of their 1-0 win against Watford after a shocking challenge by Danny Rose.

The Gunners dominated the early stages of the game in front of a packed out Emirates and looked to make their pressure pay with several crosses and set pieces into the box.

And after Bukayo Saka’s goal was ruled offside, the ball dropped to forward Alexandre Lacazette in the penalty area 34 minutes in.

But the Frenchman was completely flattened by Watford full-back Rose as he was about to cushion it down, in a challenge which can only be described as WWE-esque.

Rose appeared to lose his head completely by inexplicably running and jumping into Lacazatte, catching the striker on the neck with his out-stretched arm in the process.

Fans were left shocked by the overly-zealous defender’s tackle, taking to Twitter to vent their outrage.

One fan tweeted “Danny Rose wid da clothesline from hell lmao,” comparing the incident to a famous wrestling move.

Another posted a gif of famous WWE superstar The Undertaker demonstrating the move during his heyday on Smackdown.

The 31-year-old formerly played for Arsenal’s north London rivals Tottenham which may have triggered the moment of madness.

Luckily for the defender, Gunners captain Pierre Emerick Aubameyang’s tame penalty was denied by veteran goalkeeper Ben Foster, letting Rose off the hook.

Even more surprising was that the former England international did not receive a booking from referee Kevin Friend, again triggering a reaction from opposition fans.

An Arsenal supporter said: “How on earth Danny Rose hasn’t been booked yet is beyond me! Kevin Friend doesn’t yet understand the assignment of being a REFEREE.”

Another added: “Very card Happy this ref. But somehow Danny Rose doesn't get booked for that challenge leading to the pen?”
