Arsenal icon Robert Pires has advised Mikel Arteta and transfer chief Edu where to put their money this January. The Gunners have endured inconsistent form this campaign, but with a mammoth £150million outlay during the summer, it remains to be seen whether the club’s hierarchy will be open to more investment.
An upturn in form for Arteta’s side was abruptly brought to an end by Liverpool on Saturday evening.
Having built up momentum – particularly in defence – the Reds put four past the Gunners to stifle their comeback after a torrid start to the campaign.
Arteta’s future looked to be hanging in the balance after three successive defeats in August, particularly in light of their huge investment during the summer.
Martin Odegaard, Ben White, Aaron Ramsdale and Takehiro Tomiyasu were the biggest names to arrive as the Gunners spent more than any other club in Europe.

Pires, who spent six fruitful years playing for the club, believes that their business should not stop there though.
“It is difficult but in January if Arsenal can spend money maybe on a defender because I think our midfield and strikers are very good players,” he said.
“In my opinion sign English players because we need English players in this squad because when you play in the Premier League, you need a player like this.
“For example, in my time I played with Tony Adams, Lee Dixon and Martin Keown, Ashely Cole and this is the base for your team.

“They need to spend the money on a defender in my opinion, English.”
During the summer, Edu did exactly that when he shelled out a whopping £50million on former Brighton man Ben White.
Initial concerns were raised when the youngster struggled against Ivan Toney in the first game of the season, but he has kicked on since, becoming an integral part of Arsenal’s impressive defence.
As Pires discusses the importance of having a solid base in the team, young star Emile Smith Rowe cited White as one of the club’s dressing room leaders.
Elsewhere in the transfer market, the Gunners have recently been linked with Lille midfielder Renato Sanches.
In a distinct tease to the hoard of interested parties in the former Golden Boy winner, Sanches told L’Equipe: “Maybe Milan and Arsenal are interested but I don’t know.
“I spoke with my agent, I know which clubs are calling and which are not, but I can’t tell now.
“But I know I’m ready. If an offer comes in, I’ll find out what’s best for me.”
