Arsenal: Arteta explains how he convinced Odegaard to join
Arsenal transfer guru Edu reportedly turned down the chance to sign Pau Gomez from Atalanta while they were on the hunt for a new creative midfielder, it has been claimed. Arsenal let Mesut Ozil leave this month, and moved quickly to bring in a replacement.
Arsenal have been active this month, having let Ozil leave.
Mikel Arteta let the German playmaker leave after exiling him from the squad for the first-half of the season.
Ozil didn’t fit in with the system Arteta wanted to play, and therefore was left out of the squad for both the Premier League and Europa League.
After deciding the German was set to leave, they started looking for replacements right away.
Reports suggest Julian Brandt was originally a target, but Borussia Dortmund were reluctant to let him leave.
Eventually, they landed on Real Madrid youngster Martin Odegaard, with the Norwegian wonderkid signing until the end of the season.
The 22-year-old has signed a short-term loan, and Arsenal will reportedly talk to Madrid at the end of the season about making the move permanent.
It did come as a surprise to some that they opted to sign a youngster rather than an experienced playmaker.
And according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, they never even considered making a move for Gomez.
The Argentine was linked with a move to the Emirates, as Atalanta had decided to let him leave on the cheap.
But they apparently decided against moving for him in order to sign a younger playmaker.
Instead, Gomez was allowed to leave Atalanta and sign for Sevilla in a deal worth a reported £5million.
Speaking to his podcast, Romano explained why Arsenal decided it wasn’t worth making a move for the 32-year-old.
He said: “[There was] an opportunity of Papu Gomez [moving to] Arsenal but they never considered him as a serious contender for the role of number 10.
“They were looking for a player – obviously, they signed [Martin] Odegaard, so there is nothing going on right now.
“But, Papu Gomez was a possibility [who was] offered [but] they were looking for a young player and not for an [older player] – respecting Papu Gomez because, in my opinion, he’s one of the best players in the world.”
