Arsenal could use Lucas Torreira to secure Amadou Diawara swap deal with Roma

Arsenal are reportedly considering involving Lucas Torreira in a swap deal to land Roma midfielder Amadou Diawara.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has targeted midfielders Houssem Aouar and Thomas Partey as the clock ticks down towards transfer deadline day next week.

But it remains to be seen whether Arsenal will be able to sign either of those players.

Atletico Madrid are playing hardball over Partey's £45million release clause, while Aouar is expected to cost a similar amount, and the Gunners could also face competition from Juventus to sign the Lyon ace.

So Arsenal are having to assess alternative targets to complete Arteta's squad overhaul – and Diawara has emerged as a late option.

That's according to Il Messaggero, cited by Metro, which reports that Torreira could be offered in part-exchange for the Roma midfielder.

Torreira has been deemed surplus to requirements at the Emirates, and the former Sampdoria midfielder has been heavily linked with a return to Serie A.

As well as Roma, Torino and Fiorentina have also been credited with an interest in the 24-year-old.

Atletico Madrid were also reported to be keen, with boss Diego Simeone an admirer of the Uruguay international.

But the La Liga club will not entertain the idea of a swap deal involving Torreira and Partey, as they want to recoup the full cash value of the Ghana international's release clause.

So Diawara has emerged a potential cut-price alternative, with Roma said to value him at £19m – which would be reduced further with Torreira thrown into the bargain.

Diawara, 23, can play as a defensive midfielder or slightly further forward in the centre of the park, and has 10 caps for Guinea.
