Arsenal fans send Gabriel Martinelli message to Willian and Pepe

Arsenal played like a different team against Chelsea on Boxing Day as they thumped Frank Lampard’s side 3-1 at the Emirates.

Mikel Arteta rang in the changes after a dismal spell of form, and gave Gabriel Martinelli his first start of the campaign.

The Brazilian wonderkid played on the left wing in a 4-2-3-1 formation and looked impressive, with some believing he could provide Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang with some serious competition.

One moment in particular proved his worth to the side, as Martinelli was seen furiously pressing the Chelsea defence.

While Alexandre Lacazette shifted from the middle of the pitch to the right, Martinelli was relentless in his pressing and chased down the ball, putting Kurt Zouma and Edouard Mendy under pressure.

That level of pressing has been missing in Arsenal’s campaign so far, as the Gunners have been notably poor up front.

And Arsenal fans believe Willian and Nicolas Pepe, who have both been poor this season, should watch the clip of Martinelli’s pressing as an example of how to lead the line from the wing.

One fan wrote: “Willian would faint from exhaustion watching this.”

Another posted: “It’s very sad that both Saka and Martinelli are comfortably better than Pepe.”

“If Willian does this once his legs are shot for the 10 games after,” another joked.

One wrote: “Pepe really needs to starting showing something or else I can’t see him getting in the front three at all.”

“He moves like a shark… incredible,” an Arsenal fan wrote of Martinelli.

Arteta was quick to praise Martinelli’s pressing in his post-match press conference as he discussed the Brazilian’s link-up with Kieran Tierney.

He said: “They were really positive every time we were attacking, with the runs, playing forward, they were both involved in a lot of good attacking actions so I am really pleased with them.”
