Arsenal have already been looking at potential dates for their Europa League tie with PSV to be arranged. The Gunners were set to play their second European game of the season this week following their 2-1 win over FC Zurich.
But Queen Elizabeth II’s death saw football in this country postponed over the weekend out of respect to Her Majesty. The EFL have confirmed midweek matches will go ahead as planned this week, but Arsenal have seen their Europa League tie with PSV postponed due to police resources being switched to prepare for the Queen’s funeral next Monday.
The UEFA statement read: “UEFA today announced that the UEFA Europa League tie between Arsenal FC and PSV Eindhoven, originally to be played on Thursday 15 September, has been postponed with a new date to be communicated in due course. This is due to the severe limitations on police resources and organisational issues related to the ongoing events surrounding the national mourning for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.”
The problem for Arsenal now is trying to fit that game into what is already a tightly-packed schedule from now until the season breaks up for the Qatar World Cup. After the international break, Arsenal are scheduled to play 13 matches in the space of six weeks.
Each week will see the Gunners play a midweek match either in Europa or the Premier League. European group stage matches must all be finished before the season breaks up for the World Cup it seems, meaning the game against PSV has to be rearranged at some point in the next two months.
According to the Press Association, Arsenal have three dates in mind to reschedule the PSV clash. It is said they are ‘expecting’ either the Premier League match with Manchester City on October 19 or the Carabao Cup tie against Brighton on November 8/9 to be moved to accommodate the PSV tie.
Arsenal are set to host Pep Guardiola’s side in between league fixtures against Leeds and Southampton. The Carabao Cup match with Brighton is yet to have a fixed date, but will be played on either November 8 or November 9.
If the league match against City is rescheduled, Arsenal will then have to try and squeeze that match in once the season resumes after the World Cup. The game against Brighton may be tougher to reschedule though as the fourth round of the Carabao Cup is set to be the first game for most teams after the World Cup on December 20/21.
The quarter-finals are then scheduled to be played on January 10/11, giving Arsenal little room to find a date to reschedule the match with Brighton.
