Arsenal ‘not giving up’ on Coutinho despite Koeman transfer stance

Arsenal are not giving up on the signing of Philippe Coutinho this transfer window.

That is despite the fact Ronald Koeman is looking to bring him back into the fold at Barcelona.

Coutinho's Barca career was in tatters under Ernesto Valverde, who did not have a place for him in the starting XI.

And it was very much the same case with Quique Setien at the helm, who was planning on selling him in the summer.

But after he was sacked and Koeman placed in charge, there has been a reversal of policy.

Now, the Brazil international, who cost the club £142m in 2018, could be brought back into the side after a successful spell on loan at Bayern Munich.

Coutinho even scored twice against his parent club in the Champions League in an 8-2 victory and Koeman has been impressed with the 28-year-old.

It is a major blow for Arsenal, who were leading the charge for the ex-Liverpool star and were keen on signing him on loan.

Mikel Arteta is a big fan of the mercurial star and wanted to sign him to bring some creativity into the squad.

He would also represent a relatively cheap option with no transfer fee involved, meaning more funds can be aimed towards top target Thomas Partey.

And despite Koeman's stance on Coutinho, Sport report that Arsenal are not giving up the race.

It is stated that the Gunners believe that Barcelona's financial position means they cannot definitively say no player is for sale.

There has already been something of a fire sale at the Nou Camp after a number of departures.

Nelson Semedo is the latest, moving to Wolves for a fee of up to £35m.

He joins the likes of Luis Suarez, Ivan Rakitic, Arthur, Arda Turan, Arturo Vidal, Marc Cucurella and Carlos Perez out the exit door.

Arsenal have already brought in several players as they look to build on a positive start under Arteta.

Willian, Gabriel Magalhaes and Dani Ceballos have been signed while the likes of Partey and Houssem Aouar are also linked.
