Arsenal player ratings vs Liverpool: Aubameyang struggles in Anfield defeat

Arsenal lost for the first time this season, as Liverpool ran out 3-1 winners at Anfield. The Gunners took the lead through Alexandre Lacazette, but it was a dominant display from the champions as they continued their perfect start to the season.

After a bright start by the hosts, against the run of play, Alexandre Lacazette’s pounced on a glaring Liverpool error to open the scoring.

That lead lasted only a matter of minutes, with Sadio Mane tapping home following a Mohamed Salah strike.

And Liverpool then deservedly hit the front after the half hour mark, when Andy Robertson scored from a Trent Alexander-Arnold cross.

Arsenal improved after the break, but the game was wrapped up when Diogo Jota scored on his league debut for the club in the closing minutes.

Here’s how Express Sport rated the Arsenal players at Anfield:

Bernd Leno 6

Should have done far better on the first Liverpool goal, parrying Salah’s shot directly at the feet of Mane who couldn’t miss. Couldn’t do too much for the other two strikes.

Kieran Tierney 5

Struggled up against the brilliant Salah, let the Egyptian get around him for the equaliser.

David Luiz 7

Bullied off the ball by Keita in the build-up to Mane’s goal, but did improve and played a couple of sublime through balls. Everything went through him.

Rob Holding 7

Trusted with the ball in his own area a lot and coped well with Liverpool’s forwards in his face. Battled manfully up against Mane.

Ainsley Mailtand-Niles 6

It was his run that set up Lacazette’s goal after his cross was deflected. Had the chance to score himself but failed to control after a ball over the top. Caught out too many times positionally and didn’t offer Tierney enough support.

Granit Xhaka 6

Played an inch-perfect pass to set up for the counter attack that saw Arsenal open the scoring. Surprisingly, it was he rather than Elneny that was sacrificed for Ceballos when Arteta went chasing the game.

Mohamed Elneny 6

Given the start instead of Dani Ceballos, he and Xhaka were overrun by Liverpool’s three-man midfield in the opening 45. Improved in the second half when the Gunners tried to get on the front foot more.

Hector Bellerin 6

After being pinned back for much of the first half, he was able to show his attacking prowess as Arsenal improved after the break.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang 5

A frustrating evening for the skipper, didn’t see a lot of the ball and failed to make an impact. One opportunity deep into stoppage time, but opted to pass rather than shoot.

Alexandre Lacazette 7

Out of nowhere he pounced on Robertson’s error, to scuff the ball over Alisson and give Arsenal the early lead. But, he spurned a gilt-edged chance to get Arsenal back in the game, firing a shot striaght at the Liverpool keeper when one-on-one.

Willian 6

Struggled to make an impact going forward, but worked tirelessly in Mikel Arteta’s pressing system. Great piece of defensive work to deny Robertson.

SUBS

Dani Ceballos (on for Xhaka, min 60) 7

Brought on to provide Arsenal with more cutting edge and just minutes after replacing Xhaka, he almost created a goal. His perfectly timed through ball deserved a better finish from Lacazette. Maybe should have started.

Pepe (on for Willian, 68) 5

Made no impact on the game at all.

Eddie Nketiah (on for Lacazette, 74) 5

Tough assignment for the youngster, with Liverpool on top in the final few minutes.
