Arsenal ‘tie Thomas Partey transfer’ into Atletico Madrid negotiations for Lucas Torreira

Lucas Torreira is in talks over a move to Atletico Madrid and Arsenal are hoping to tie in their pursuit of Thomas Partey, according to reports. Mikel Arteta identified the Ghanaian as a transfer target at the start of 2020 before the coronavirus pandemic called sport to a halt.

The Gunners were always optimistic that they could pull off a deal for Partey but their funds have been restricted by the financial implications of the crisis.

Nonetheless, it did not stop them from laughing off two player-plus-cash bids for the 27-year-old earlier this summer.

Both offers included Matteo Guendouzi and were rebuffed by Atletico Madrid sporting director Andrea Berta.

Now the two clubs are in contact once again over a deal which would see Torreira join up with international colleague Luis Suarez, who is set to join Atletico from Barcelona.

According to The Telegraph, Arsenal are optimistic it will increase their chances of landing Partey.

Mikel Arteta wants to receive a guaranteed transfer fee for the player, who he believes is worth around £20million.

Partey has a release clause of £45million and while Atletico Madrid are not interested in a swap deal, the deal for Torreira would help raise funds towards a successful swoop.

Atletico have made it clear that they will not consider offers below that figure but Torreira is said to have made the situation more flexible.

Furthermore, it would also mean Atletico already have another central midfielder through the door if Partey was then to leave.

The box-to-box powerhouse is thought to be keen on a Premier League move and supported Arsenal as a boy.

He has been offered the chance to extend his contract at the Wanda Metropolitano but talks have stalled between the two parties.

Torreira had looked destined to return to Italy with Torino and Fiorentina in contention.

Arteta has been told that he will need to raise funds in order to launch a move for another midfield target Houssem Aouar.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano thinks Arsenal will bid for the Frenchman but it’s likely to be him or Partey that arrives at the Emirates and not both.

“We will see because Arsenal are monitoring him so they will try again in my opinion,” he said on the Here We Go podcast.

“They are in talks with his agent but it’s so difficult in this moment to get him because of the president Aulas.

“It’s complicated but for sure he is on the list. I will also say it’s just one between Thomas and Aouar this summer. Both is impossible but in this moment it’s very complicated.”
