Arteta’s dressing room message disclosed by Bernd Leno after Arsenal defeat

Bernd Leno has revealed what Mikel Arteta told his Arsenal players following their 1-0 defeat to Manchester City.

The Gunners went into Saturday's Etihad clash with high hopes of ending their long winless run away to 'Big Six' sides in the Premier League .

But Pep Guardiola's side took the lead through Raheem Sterling, and it proved to the only goal as Arsenal's record stretched to an astonishing 29 games without victory on the road against the big six.

And Arsenal boss Arteta told his players they should have been "upset" – because they had chances to at least take a point from the game.

The Gunners had chances to equalise but were denied by several superb saves from goalkeeper Ederson.

Afterwards, Ederson's opposite number Leno told Sky Sports: "It’s very hard. The manager said we have to be upset because [getting a result] was possible.

‘But on the other side there were a lot of positives.

"It’s disappointing that we lost. But we competed today and had chances to get a point.

"Unfortunately we didn’t take the chances."

Leno said it was a very different game from the two sides' last Premier League clash back in June, when Arsenal lost 3-0 following an abject defensive performance.

"We controlled the game but the big chances we missed," he said of Saturday's clash. "We tried everything but we couldn’t score.

"The game was very close and Man City could feel that. They didn’t have too many chances."

Arteta, who was Guardiola's No2 at City before replacing sacked Unai Emery in the Arsenal hotseat, was pleased that his team ran City close.

"I felt we kept growing and growing, having more belief that we could get something," he said.

"I’m proud of the way we played individually and collectively. It’s not easy to produce a performance here.

"We need everything to go our way to get a win here. The three or four chances we had, you need to put them away."
