‘He’ll be a success, whether it’s at Chelsea or somewhere else’: Ex-Blues stopper Asmir Begovic backs Kepa Arrizabalaga to rediscover his best form after losing his place in Frank Lampard’s team to Edouard Mendy
- The Spanish international has not featured for Chelsea since October 17
- The 26-year-old has lost his place in the starting line up to Edouard Mendy
- Asmir Begovic is still confident that Kepa Arrizabalaga will be a ‘huge success’
- The Bournemouth stopper believes Mendy has ‘solidified’ goalkeeping position
Kepa Arrizabalaga has the ability to prove ‘everybody wrong’ at Chelsea, former Blues stopper Asmir Begovic has claimed.
Chelsea spent a world record fee for a goalkeeper when they purchased the 26-year-old for £71million from Athletic Bilbao in 2018.
Kepa, however, has struggled for form and consistency during his time at Stamford Bridge and simply hasn’t justified his enormous price tag.

Blues boss Frank Lampard eventually lost faith in the Spaniard and replaced him with Rennes keeper Edouard Mendy in the summer.
Begovic acknowledges that Kepa’s time in west London has not worked out as planned but believes the Spanish international will prove his critics wrong whether at Stamford Bridge or at a new club.
Begovic, who made 19 appearances for Chelsea between 2015-17, told talkSPORT: ‘I don’t think it’s gone to plan for everyone.
‘These situations are never straightforward. If you spend a big transfer fee it doesn’t mean everything is going to work out; there are a lot of factors into making a move work and making an impact at a club.
‘Mendy has come in and done really, really well, I think he’s really solidified that position.

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard signed Edouard Mendy in the summer to replace Kepa
‘He’s been impressive, he’s been a joy to watch to be honest and he’s someone I really enjoy watching.
‘But can Kepa still prove everybody wrong? Possibly.
‘I think Kepa is a really good goalkeeper, he played really well in Spain before his move to Chelsea and it’s obviously been a bit of a tricky time for him.
‘He’s got really good quality and I’m sure he’ll be a huge success, whether it’s at Chelsea or somewhere else. ‘
Kepa has made 98 appearances for the Blues and started the 2020-21 season in goal.
But was dropped after Chelsea signed Mendy and has not played for the club since October 17.
