Ajax were unwilling to allow the full-back to leave after suffering the loss of Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie De Jong to Juventus and Barcelona.
Tagliafico’s contract runs until 2022 so the club are under no pressure to part with the defender with reports suggesting they could push for a fee of around £30million.
The left-back has been a regular under manager Erik ten Hag with 38 appearances in all competitions.
He also poses a strong attacking threat with five goals and seven assists this season.
Barca’s Firpo has had a significantly more mixed campaign with 17 appearances in all competitions.
The 23-year-old has managed just one goal and one assist during his first year at the Nou Camp.
Inter Milan and Roma are thought to be interested in defender and the financial implications of the coronavirus pandemic means Barca may have to sell before they can buy.
