Battle of Hollywood in the works between Ryan Reynolds’ Wrexham and MLS side

Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Matthew McConaughey are cooking up a pre-season friendly between Wrexham and Austin.

Oscar winner McConaughey, best known for roles in Dallas Buyers Club and True Detective, is the Minister of Culture at MLS side Austin FC – and, it seems, a good pal of Wrexham co-owner Reynolds.

McConaughey popped up in the commentary box midway through Austin's 1-1 stalemate against Colorado on Sunday and revealed that he and Reynolds have been discussing the idea of a Hollywood friendly. "I was actually talking to Mr Reynolds today," he began.

"We're going to work up, maybe, a little friendly with his team." That prompted excitement from the rest of the commentary box as one person said: "A little Wrexham Austin? He'd be all over that!"

It didn't take long for Wrexham fans in the replies to start getting excited. One person wrote: "This would be a party." Another wrote: "Would be up for this! Imagine an away day in @AustinFC! Wow."

A third person added: "Matthew McConaughey discussing Wrexham during an MLS game? Nuts." While someone else commented: "Make it happen!!!!"

Reynolds and acting pal Ryan McElhenney attracted worldwide attention after buying Wrexham in February last year. The pair have turned the club into title favourites in the National League and grown the club's fanbase through a Disney+ documentary.

That has sparked increased interest in Wrexham from the United States, so much so that their FA Cup 4th qualifying round tie against National League North side Blyth Spartans will be shown on TV across the pond this weekend.

As far as the league is concerned, Wrexham are currently second behind Notts County, having won nine, drawn two and lost two of their opening 13 games.

Phil Parkinson's side were involved in a 12-goal thriller on Saturday, eventually coming out on top 7-5 at home to strugglers Barnet.
