Ben Davies' move to Liverpool has been confirmed as the Premier League side finally land a centre-back on Deadline Day.

The 25-year-old joined from Preston in a £2m deal, with six months left on his deal at the Championship side, and will take the No.28 shirt.

Speaking on his arrival, the defender said: “I’m obviously delighted to be here.

“It’s a huge opportunity. Obviously it came as a bit of a surprise when it first came but once you start to get your head around it, the opportunity that is in front of me is incredible. I’d be silly to not make the most of it and learn off the players [at the club].

“I’ve never actually been to Anfield and I haven’t had a look around yet. I had a quick look out and had a look at the pitch and it looks like carpet, which obviously you’d expect.

“I haven’t actually walked out of the tunnel yet, so I’m looking forward to that. Just to be in this kind of atmosphere is brilliant.”

And the centre-back completed his medical on Monday – hours before the 11pm GMT deadline – as the champions made a late change to their transfer strategy.

Davies' move to Anfield ends a stay at Deepdale believed to have started from the age of 11 years old.

He joined the academy at the age before making a debut against Coventry in 2013, with loans at York City, Tranmere Rovers, Southport, Newport County and Fleetwood Town following.

But he became a regular under manager Alex Neil following his arrival in 2017, making 144 appearances for Preston.

The end of his contract in the summer had seen Bournemouth and Celtic have talks with Davies – but the Reds have snuck in to get their man.

Although he stands at 6ft 1in, he is more fond of carrying the ball than bullying opposition forwards, and has been praised for his pace.

And he could expect some starting XI time at Anfield amid an injury crisis which has Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip out.

The moves comes after Jurgen Klopp refused to speak about the deal after Liverpool's 3-1 win over West Ham on Sunday.

Sky Sports reporter Patrick Davison asked the manager: “I’m going to throw a name at you. Ben Davies? Preston?”

With Klopp saying in response: “Tottenham? Ben Davies as well? (Laughs) Nah nothing to say about that.”

The reporter kept pushing for an answer, added: “But you’d like a centre-half still? And is it possible?”

With Klopp adding: “I say it all the time, in our situation it makes sense. By the way Nat Phillips played a decent game.”
