Callum Hudson-Odoi has overtaken Arjen Robben to become the youngest Chelsea player to register 10 assists in the Premier League.
The 21-year-old won a penalty in the first half of Chelsea’s 3-1 victory over Aston Villa on Boxing Day, which made it his 10th Premier League assist since his debut in January 2018.
Robben, meanwhile, joined Chelsea at the age of 20 and registered nine assists in his first Premier League season before getting his 10th at the start of the 2005/06 campaign.
After initially struggling to secure a place in Chelsea’s attack following Thomas Tuchel’s arrival in January, Hudson-Odoi has thrived over the last few months.
And Tuchel was impressed with the winger’s latest performance in Chelsea’s win over Villa.
‘I think he was brilliant,’ said the Chelsea manager.
‘I was never frustrated with him today. He had one bad decision under pressure when he tried to do a back-heel in front of the coaching staff, maybe there was an easier solution to escape the pressure with an easy pass, there was a clear pass to NG [N’Golo Kante]. But I was never frustrated with him today.
‘I think he was brilliant today and we forced him. Normally it was clear he plays one half to the maximum of 60 minutes. This was already more than the recommendation of the fitness department but he was strong in training so I wanted to have him on the pitch.
‘Hakim Ziyech has only one training session, Callum had two and a half, so we decided to put him in.
‘He was involved. He overcame some obstacles today and some adversity. There was a big game a very important game from him.
‘Also we took a risk because he only just came back from Covid.’
