Cash-strapped Barcelona eyeing deal for infamous Man Utd flop Adnan Januzaj

Barcelona are working to secure the signature of former Manchester United player Adnan Januzaj, who is weighing up whether to commit his future to Real Sociedad.

The Belgian was one of the most exciting young talents to emerge from the United in 2013, but he failed to live up to expectations at Old Trafford.

Januzaj made 50 appearances for the Red Devils before moving to La Liga outfit Sociedad in 2017, and his contract at the club expires at the end of the season.

Given what an integral role the 26-year-old plays at the club, many expected the former Borussia Dortmund loanee to not hesitate when offered an extension.

But Barca have thrown a spanner in the works by registering their interest in Januzaj, according to SPORT.

The Catalan giants have even ‘interfered’ with negotiations to try and convince the former United prodigy to leave for the Camp Nou, and he is seriously considering the approach.

New Barca boss Xavi is working to try and guide his squad back to its closer days with very tight financial constraints.

It is no secret that the former midfielder is keen to add another forward or two to his ranks this season, with Manchester City’s Ferran Torres and Raheem Sterling both linked with moves to the La Liga.

But there are fears that Barca may now lack the pulling power they once had due to their finances and also after they were knocked out of the Champions League group stages earlier this week.

Speaking after the defeat to Bayern Munich which sealed their fate on Wednesday, club president Joan Laporta said: “I share your disappointment with the Champions League tie.

"We all agree that we have to strengthen the first team.

"The problem is that we have inherited very high contracts that do not give us the sufficient salary margin.

"We are looking for the formula to improve the team this winter.

"We are working to achieve it. And we will achieve it.

"Now I ask that we all row in the same direction right now for the good of the club."

It remains to be seen whether Barca are able to convince Januzaj that he will be able to spearhead the revival at the club, and just how much of an influence the former United star will have in the coming seasons if he decides to jump ship.
