Chelsea boss Frank Lampard issues challenge to Blues ace after £230m spending spree

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has claimed Christian Pulisic will benefit from the Blues spending big on attacking reinforcements, because the new players will take the attention away from him and afford him the ability to create space and chances by himself. Pulisic was superb for the Blues late last season, and will form a new-look attacking line-up with the likes of Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Kai Havertz.

Pulisic emerged as one of the brightest prospects in the Premier League last season after he put in some brilliant performances late in the year.

The American, who Chelsea paid £57million for as a replacement for Eden Hazard, took a while to find his feet in England, but scored four times and provided four assists in his final nine games of the campaign.

Now, he goes into his second season at the club with even more expectations on his shoulders, but some of those expectations will have been lifted by the arrivals of Werner, Ziyech and Havertz.

Blues chiefs went all-out in the transfer market to provide Lampard with top-class attacking options, and the boss believes Pulisic will benefit from having better players around him.

Lampard explained the American wonderkid will be able to create more space and have the attention taken away from him with the new players around him.

He told NBC Sports: “He’s come back really hungry, and he’ll only improve with the players we’ve brought in around him in those forward areas.

“They’ll hopefully be on the same wavelength as him and be able to take attention away from him with their movements, it might give Christian more space.

“The more these players work together, I’m excited about these forward players and Christian’s right in the middle of that.”

Pulisic was handed the number ten shirt ahead of the new season, having previously held the 22 jersey. The winger took the shirt after Willian departed the club at the end of the season.

And Lampard insisted he’s confident that the 21-year-old will be able to live up to the expectations of the new squad number, and revealed he spoke to Pulisic on the phone to inform him of the change.

He continued: “I wanted him to have it because I felt like he deserved it and he wanted it. He came last year and Willian was at the club, but he was almost the man in waiting at the club to take the number 10 shirt and I think it was right he took it with his experience.

“When it became open I think what Christian delivered in his first year more than warranted that he gets the shirt and what it means.

“I know it means a lot and there will be a few in that line to try and have that shirt but I was keen for him to have it and very pleased to actually make the call.

“I called him, as he was home at the time, and I could sense he was happy and I get the sense now it’s another little push up for him where he can hopefully feel confident that he’s here, he’s number 10, the responsibilities that come with that and I’ve got no worries with Christian.

“As I say, he’s hungry and the only thing we have to continue to do is manage him because he’s so fast and the way he plays, we have to manage and try to come away from those big injuries he had last year.

“That’s something we’re working on as well with the medical staff, because we all know what a fit Christian Pulisic can do.”
