Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has defended his playing style after Mauricio Pochettino characterised the Blues as a ‘defensive team’. Tuchel’s side have one of the best defences in Europe this season but he has said that it is too ‘complex’ to attach such labels.

The West Londoners are top of the Premier League and sailed through their Champions League group.

Only one of the four goals Chelsea have conceded in their 12 top-flight fixtures came in open play.

They have also conceded only once in Europe. A sensational 4-0 thumping of Juventus on Tuesday night sealed Chelsea’s passage to the knockout rounds.

The likes of Antonio Rudiger, Cesar Azpilicueta and Thiago Silva have been excellent this season for the Stamford Bridge outfit. Trevoh Chalobah, who opened the scoring against Juve, and Andreas Christensen have provided solid back-up when needed.

But Paris Saint Germain boss Pochettino called Chelsea a ‘defensive team’ earlier this week despite them scoring the most goals in their Champions League group and being the second-highest scorers in the Premier League.

“Chelsea have a defensive team,” Pochettino, who has been linked with the Manchester United job, said.

“They play in transition and on the counter.”

Tuchel, who has guided his team three points clear at the top of the division, has rebutted the claim and admitted he ‘doesn’t care’ what Pochettino or anyone else has to say.

“I don’t listen too much to what people say about us,” the German said.

“I feel into my team and I feel into our staff with what we feel comfortable [with] and I felt from day one very brave in our approach to defending.

“We had instantly a lot of ball possession always so from there we tried to create chances and to be dangerous.

“Then comes a new season and we try to recreate it. The group is a bit new and things are like this, in some moments things come a bit easier and you catch momentum.

“This is clearly the case now and full credit to the guys.

“But we are not so worried about what people say about us. We want to be strong in all parts of this game.

“It is a very complex game: some moments you have to defend strong and some you find the spaces to attack a bit easier than in other moments.

“It is so complex and we do this together. It stays a team effort and this is the outstanding characteristic of this team.

“It is a strong group, it is a determined group, it is a hungry group, and it’s a pleasure to coach them.

“So full credit to them and from here we go. There is no need to get carried away, but we can enjoy the moment and we want to continue.”
