Chelsea legend Ashley Cole hails three new signings that have made biggest difference

Chelsea legend Ashley Cole has hailed the impact of three of Frank Lampard’s summer signings. Lampard spent around £220million on bringing in seven new players during the last transfer window. His attacking options were boosted with the arrivals of Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Kai Havertz.

But it is at the other end of the pitch that Cole has seen the biggest difference.

Centre-back Thiago Silva and left-back Ben Chilwell have helped sure up the defence.

Goalkeeper Edouard Mendy was the final player to head through the doors at Stamford Bridge.

And Cole has hailed the trio for the impact they have had on his former team.

“[Improving the defence was] very important,” Cole said on Sky Sports.

“I think last year they dominated games and couldn’t finish games off then were getting hit on the counter attack and conceding sloppy goals.

“I think Frank would be honest about that and they’ve addressed that this season with the goalkeeper, bringing Thiago Silva in there and bringing in the quality of Ben Chilwell.

“I think they’ve solidified that defence, they look solid. They look a threat and they’re not conceding as many goals which was the main problem.”

Mendy kept three clean sheets in his first three Premier League games ahead of the visit of Sheffield United on Saturday.

And Cole says the Senegal international has brought an assurance to the Blues team.

“Now the defence has confidence behind them,” Cole added.

“I think they now play with a line a little bit higher due to the fact they know they have a big, strong commanding goalkeeper.

“They were susceptible to crosses which I think affected them in big games. Now he’s good with crosses, he’s making saves, been good with his feet.

“For me, he’s been brilliant this season and he’s made some very important saves.”

Cole has also revealed he has spoken to Chilwell since his £50m arrival from Leicester City.

England international Chilwell asked Cole how to succeed at Stamford Bridge.

“Defensively he’s been solid,” Cole said on Sky Sports.

“He’s come into a side that was leaking goals with a lot of individual mistakes. Apart from Thiago Silva against West Brom the individual mistakes have been cut down.

“Chilwell, he can play in different areas of the pitch, he’s comfortable on the ball.

“I had a conversation with him and the first thing was ‘what do I need to make it at Chelsea’. He was so enthusiastic, he wanted to learn and he wanted to make it.

“We saw him at Leicester, that’s why Chelsea brought him and we’re seeing it now at Chelsea.”
