Reece James’ torn hamstring in Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Brighton has stretched Thomas Tuchel’s squad even further, with injuries continuing to have an effect on proceedings in west London. And in a bid to increase their chances of a title, Thomas Tuchel has reportedly opted for a move to sign Atletico Madrid’s Kieran Trippier – taking him off Newcastle’s hands.
The report by the Guardian states that Tuchel is in need of a right-back given James’ long-term injury will spill over into March, meaning he will miss a large spell of football including the Champions League round of 16 first leg.
His absence will prompt a move into the transfer market from Tuchel, who has taken the steps to deal with his newfound injury crisis into his own hands.
Reports had emerged that Newcastle were looking to sign Trippier after he made his desire to return to England clear.
And given their newfound wealth, a deal for the ex-Burnley star had been reported as being simple to complete.
However the move has alerted Chelsea to his availability, and they could hijack a deal for the Bury-born right-back given their Champions League and title hopeful status.
The report further goes on to state that there is a similar problem on the left-hand side of defence, too.
Ben Chilwell has been ruled out with a long-term injury that he sustained in November, with a return date so far unknown for the left-back.
Suggestions have been made that the club are looking to recall Emerson Palmieri from Lyon, although the French club are not keen on such a move.
And if he was to stay at the Groupama Stadium, a move could be sanctioned for Lucas Digne or Sergino Dest.
The move for Digne could happen after Everton completed the signing of Ukraine left-back Vitaliy Mykolenko early on New Year’s Day.
“Chilly [Chilwell] of course has had his surgery and he has our best wishes and all of our energy to come back healthy and as soon as possible,” Tuchel stated via the club’s official website.
“Unfortunately it seems like the season is over for him.
“With Reece [James] it’s a hamstring injury, a muscle injury, and as always with muscle injuries, the examination [results] comes a little bit later. You cannot rush these things.
“The images are better if you wait a little bit. So the images will come back to us later today I guess and only then will we know more about his status.
“That’s the situation on the wing-backs at this moment.”
