Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta was left on the bench by Frank Lampard as the Blues suffered a surprise 3-1 defeat against Arsenal. Full-backs Ben Chilwell and Reece James made surprise returns from their respective injuries to keep Azpilicueta out of the starting XI.

Chelsea got off to a poor start to the game as James fouled Kieran Tierney in the box. Alexandre Lacazette converted the penalty to open the scoring.

Granit Xhaka added a second with a stunning 25-yard free-kick and Bukayo Saka’s cross found the back of the net for a third.

Tammy Abraham pulled one back for Chelsea with minutes left on the clock but just before he struck Azpilicueta vented his frustrations from the stands.

The 31-year-old defender was unhappy with the way Arsenal’s players needed treatment, specifically Pablo Mari following a collision with Abraham.

“Another one on the floor,” the Spaniard was heard shouting.

Chelsea had the chance to get back into the game when Mason Mount was fouled by Mari in the box in added time but Jorginho had his effort from 12-yards saved by Bernd Leno.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was under huge pressure heading into the showdown as the Gunners were languishing in 15th place in the Premier League table.

The victory lifts them up to 14th but more importantly gives them a platform to kickstart their season.

“We needed that result,” defender Tierney said. “We’ve had a few bad performances but we started better than we have lately and didn’t wait until we were 1-0 down to start playing.

“All the youngsters here are hungry to play. We have to keep going. At half-time the message was to keep going.

“Bernd Leno dug us out of a hole at the end. It would have been a long five minutes had that gone in.”
