Conor Coady added to England squad as Harry Maguire replacement

Wolves defender Conor Coady has received a first England call-up – as replacement for axed Harry Maguire.

Gareth Southgate initially picked Maguire in his squad for Iceland and Denmark – only to reverse the decision hours later when the Manchester United skipper was found guilty of assault and attempted bribery in a Greek court.

Maguire has since been granted an appeal – meaning under Greek law he is now innocent until the re-trial.

But England boss Southgate has resisted the temptation to recall him and opted for Coady instead.

There had been huge clamour for the Wolves skipper to be included in the latest squad following his superb form for the Midlands club.

The ex-Liverpool and Huddersfield man, 27, has been ever-present in the Premier league for two years – and led Wolves into the Europa League semi-finals last season.

Southgate has also drafted Ainsley Maitland-Niles into the senior set-up for the first time – following his man-of-the-match performance in Arsenal's Community Shield victory over Liverpool.

Ironically, the Gunners' versatile England Under-21 star has been strongly linked with a £22million move to Molineux in the current window.

On the decision to remove Maguire from the squad, Southgate said at the time: "In light of this evening’s developments, I can confirm I have withdrawn Harry Maguire from the England squad for the matches against Iceland and Denmark.

"As I said earlier today, I reserved the right to review the situation.

"Having spoken to Manchester United and the player, I have made this decision in the best interests of all parties and with consideration of the impact on our preparations for next week."
