Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed his old No.7 by Manchester United following his return to Old Trafford after nine seasons with Real Madrid and three with Juventus.

The 36-year-old has returned to United on a two-year deal after leaving Italy, but looked unlikely to pick up the number he wore before leaving in 2009.

Since that switch to Spain, each of Michael Owen, Antonio Valencia, Angel Di Maria, Memphis Depay and Alexis Sanchez have worn the famous shirt before it was handed to Edinson Cavani last season.

Ronaldo, however, had worn the same digit since his first season in La Liga back in 09/10 in which he wore nine, marking 12 consecutive seasons building his CR7 brand.

It had been reported that Ronaldo could've picked up the No.21 if the Red Devils had failed in their bid to take the 7 away from Cavani before the Premier League season resumes.

Daniel James, Ander Herrera and Rafael have worn that number for United most recently, and Cavani now takes it having worn it for Uruguay in the past.

The club wrote: "Manchester United can confirm that Cristiano Ronaldo will wear the iconic no.7 shirt after returning to Old Trafford.

"The Portuguese superstar famously wore the legendary shirt number during his first spell at United and we can now confirm that Ronaldo will have it on his back once again.

"In his first six seasons at the club, between 2003 and 2009, Ronaldo made 292 appearances and scored 118 goals, winning nine trophies including three Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League.

"As we all know, the no. 7 is a special number in the history of United.

"It has previously been worn by club icons like George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona and David Beckham. Now, it returns to the man who succeeded Beckham in it, Ronaldo."

Ronaldo said of the news: "I wasn't sure if it would be possible to have the number seven shirt again, so I would like to say a huge thank you to Edi for this incredible gesture."

Having told the official website following his return: “Manchester United is a club that has always had a special place in my heart, and I have been overwhelmed by all the messages I have received since the announcement on Friday.

"I cannot wait to play at Old Trafford in front of a full stadium and see all the fans again.

"I'm looking forward to joining up with the team after the international games, and I hope we have a very successful season ahead.”
