Culture Secretary reveals Premier League fans could return to stadiums by September

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden is hopeful football fans will be able to return to stadiums by the start of next season.

The Premier League and EFL Championship will complete the remainder of their 2019/20 fixtures behind closed doors in a bid to limit the spread of coronavirus.

A one-month turnaround is expected between the end of the current campaign and the beginning of next term in September, although packed-out grounds are unlikely for the foreseeable future due to social distancing measures.

Speaking at Wednesday’s Downing Street press conference, Dowden said: “I would really hope that by the return of the new season, we might be in a position whereby some fans could start to return to stadiums.”
