David Alaba is reportedly open to joining Liverpool in the January transfer window but would prefer to remain with Bayern Munich until the summer to join Real Madrid or Barcelona on a free.
The versatile defender’s contract expires in 2021 and Bayern have withdrawn their offer to extend his deal at the Allianz Arena.
Bayern president Herbert Hainer explained: “We submitted to David and his advisor some time ago what we think was a very good offer.
“During the last meeting we had said we wanted clarity by the end of October. We did not hear anything until yesterday and we contacted his advisor.
“The answer was that the offer was still unsatisfactory and we should think about it again. We then decided to take the offer completely off the table. This means there is no longer an offer.”
Despite Bayern winning the Champions League last season to complete a treble, the 28-year-old wants a new challenge after eight years in Bavaria.
He can sign a pre-contract agreement with a new club as of January 1 but there has been speculation clubs could launch a mid-season move for the Austria defender.
And Football Insider say that Liverpool are among the clubs weighing up a bid for Alaba and that the defender is open to a move to Anfield.
Liverpool could be without first-choice centre-halves Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez for the rest of the season and are expected to use January to recruit fresh talent.
Alaba would be available for around £30million in the winter window say Football Insider but would also demand a significant salary.
That means neither Barca or Real Madrid are realistic options in January although they could look to make a move if the Austrian is available for nothing next summer.

Alaba is on Liverpool’s list with his former Bayern team-mate Thiago Alcantara having linked up with Jurgen Klopp’s Premier League champions earlier this year.
The defender is a valuable option given he can play across the pitch but is primarily a left-back or a central defender, where all of his appearances this season have come.
Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy believes Alaba would be an ideal acquisition and possibly the best player available to Klopp.
“In terms of his ability, he absolutely fits. He’s a super player,” Murphy told Stadium Astro.
“I suppose what you’d have to be looking at from Jurgen Klopp’s perspective is the balance in the squad moving forward when everyone is fit.

“Or, do you look short-term and get the best option in possible? That would be him.
“I’d want to do it, personally, you can’t have too many players. But, I think there would be a lot of competition.
“I think he would certainly add quality and strength in depth. But, there will be a lot of takers for Alaba.”
Meanwhile, speaking publicly about his future, Alaba declared: “What’s next, I don’t know right now. I have not made any plans for my future.
“I am a player who really likes to play for Bayern. I am happy to be part of this team. Nobody official has contacted me. It’s difficult to say what the future will hold in store.
“After our last talk, I told them [the club] that I can’t make a decision in seven days, we played three times in those seven days.
“Bayern were the club I talked to. I did not have any contact to other clubs.
“I have always said that I would have wished for internal things to remain internal. It hurt and disappointed me that my position was portrayed the way it was, this was not the truth. The salary put out in media, it’s not like that. I was disappointed, it was not discounted from the hierarchy.”
