De Jong breaks ranks to admit "chaos" at Barcelona after Messi transfer decision

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong admits the club is in turmoil after Lionel Messi let it be known that he would like to seek a transfer away.

Messi believes that he is entitled to depart the Nou Camp on a free transfer this summer, something that Barca insist is now no longer on the table after they believe a clause in his contract expired.

The club captain has one year left on his existing deal, and so Barca are said to be maintaining a stance that would only allow him to leave if a club paid his buyout clause in full.

The star's father and representative Jorge Messi has been holding talks with the club in a bid to break the deadlock, and midfielder De Jong says it is a confusing time in Catalonia right now.

"I followed this from a distance and, how should I say, it's kind of chaos now, many things are going on," De Jong told reporters from the Netherlands camp.

"But I didn't speak with Messi personally, not with the club.

"I will see when I arrive after this week in Barcelona how things are going, and what is really happening.

"Honestly I don't know what will happen."

The Dutch are without a head coach after Ronald Koeman left them to join Barca, with the ex-Southampton and Everton boss being replaced by his former assistant Dwight Lodeweges on a caretaker basis.

De Jong and his teammates face UEFA Nations League matches against Poland and Italy, both in Amsterdam, in the coming week, as they bid to get their campaign off to a flying start.
