Chelsea misfit Kepa Arrizabalaga has vowed to win back his starting spot at Stamford Bridge.

The £71m flop was benched in favour of 39-year-old Willy Caballero earlier this season and is now playing understudy to new signing Edouard Mendy.

Chelsea explored the possibility of a loan move for goalkeeper Kepa, who has made a series of high-profile errors, but he always wanted to stay and fight for his place.

Kepa, who is currently with the Spain team ahead of their games with Portugal, Switzerland and Ukraine, said: "In the life of a footballer there are ups and downs.

“But in the end what is in my hands is to work. I feel good, strong, and confident. During your career sometimes you have to live moments like this.

“I'm confident I can turn it around and do my best when I play. We all want to play.

“But I don't think about anything beyond day-to-day life and focusing on the national team's matches.

"In the medium to long term, things can change. I want to play, I want to be on the field and I will work for that.”

Chelsea were ready to listen to offers for Kepa this summer but a suitable deal never materialised and he started the season as the club’s No 1.

That all changed when he was dropped after making a big mistake against Liverpool, and Mendy has since taken over as Frank Lampard’s No 1.

Chelsea return to action on October 17, after the international break, as they host Southampton in the Premier League.
