Christian Eriksen ‘might want to look around for something new… he’s not suited to Italian football’, believes Denmark legend Michael Laudrup… with Inter Milan ready to cut their losses and sell him to PSG in January
- Christian Eriksen has endured a difficult start to his time as an Inter Milan player
- The Danish midfielder joined in January in a £17.5m transfer from Tottenham
- However, he has fallen down the pecking order under manager Antonio Conte
Christian Eriksen has been urged to cut short his Inter Milan career by Denmark legend Michael Laudrup who believes he ‘can’t adapt tactically’ to the demands of Italian football.
Eriksen only joined Inter in January from Tottenham in a £17.5million transfer, signing a four-and-a-half year deal. However, his time at the Serie A giants hasn’t gone as planned so far.
The Denmark playmaker has dropped down the pecking order under Antonio Conte – with reports this week suggesting that the latter is ‘disappointed’ in the 28-year-old’s output.
Christian Eriksen has been advised to leave Inter Milan by Denmark legend Michael Laudrup
Eriksen has struggled at Inter since joining the club in a £17.5m deal from Tottenham in January
And Laudrup believes his compatriot should look to go as he ‘is not suitable for Italian football’
Ligue 1 outfit Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly interested in pursuing the midfielder when the transfer window opens in the new year.
And reflecting on his compatriot’s short time at the San Siro, Laudrup feels it’s best that Eriksen closes this chapter on his career already.
‘I don’t believe he is not suitable for Italian football’, Laudrup told TV3.
‘He’s obviously a great player. He has two midfielders behind him and a giant like Romelu Lukaku who moves a lot and Lautaro Martinez, who is technically valid, ahead of him.
‘There can be so many other things behind it. Mentally and culturally and things like that. But I can’t believe he can’t adapt tactically.
‘I see that the local press, especially La Gazzetta dello Sport which is based in Milan. They have journalists who are already writing that his experience is coming to an end. They’ll get this information from somewhere, maybe also from the club.
‘I think Eriksen might want to look around for something new. But it’s not easy either. It is not easy to find a club that wants to pay a lot of money for him, considering how little he played.’
Antonio Conte is reported to be less than impressed with Christian Eriksen so far this season
Eriksen has struggled under Conte since making his £17.5m switch from Tottenham in January
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Conte is ‘disappointed’ with the playmaker with the pair not understanding each other. The Inter manager was reportedly unhappy with Eriksen’s display in their 2-2 draw against Parma last weekend and was angry at his lack of urgency to take a corner when Inter were trailing.
Last month Eriksen demanded more game time from Conte.
‘I don’t want to sit the bench for the whole season,’ Eriksen said.
‘I hope this isn’t the coach’s or the club’s intention. It is going to be a busy season, lot of games in [the] programme, I expect to play.
‘It’s never nice to sit the bench and one tends to be less patient as his experience grows.’
Eriksen has warned Conte that he is not happy sitting on the bench, speaking last month
The midfielder started the opening game of the 2020-21 campaign against Fiorentina but could only manage a place on the bench in the following two fixtures. He has started two Serie A games since but is yet to see out a full 90 minutes this season.
He continued: ‘There are many expectations on me, people thought I’d do the difference in every game, but it didn’t happen.
‘That’s why they are looking at me with different eyes. I’ve had highs and lows after the lockdown. I had a great start with Inter after I arrived and now I am living in a new situation.’
Inter currently sit sixth in Serie A with 11 points from six matches and bottom of Group B in the Champions League as their indifferent start to the season continues.
