Alberto Moreno showed old rivalries never die by sending a message to Liverpool fans after getting the better of Manchester United in the Europa League final.

The Spaniard was a second half substitute for Villarreal and scored in the penalty shoot-out as they overcame United to lift their first ever major trophy. 

And in the aftermath of the unlikely victory, Moreno took to Instagram for a live stream, where in one section emphatically screamed ‘Vamos, You’ll Never Walk Alone! You’ll Never Walk Alone!’ into the camera in a clear nod to his former side Liverpool after beating their bitter rivals.

It is a moment which will delight Reds fans after the former player helped deny United a first major trophy since 2017. 

After drawing 1-1 in normal time through Gerard Moreno and Edinson Cavani strikes, the Spanish outlet overcame the favourites in a mammoth 11-10 shoot-out. 

The left-back made 141 times for Liverpool from 2014-2019 and was part of the Reds squad that lifted the Champions League trophy in his final season.

It is the 28-year-old’s second Europa League triumph after winning with Sevilla in 2014, before being beaten in the final by his old club for Liverpool the season after.

It was a disappointing evening for United after failing to convince throughout the 120 minutes of action in Gdansk before David de Gea’s saved penalty sealed their fate.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insisted his side ‘didn’t turn up’ in the showpiece event as his wait for a first major trophy in charge goes on.

‘We didn’t turn up. We didn’t play as well as we can do. That’s football for you. Sometimes decided on one kick and that’s the difference between winning and losing’, said Solskjaer following the defeat. 

‘We’ve got to, not savour the feeling, but taste it and make sure you don’t get it again.’
