FA Cup 3rd round: Results from the weekend's action
Premier League and Championship sides entered the FA Cup at the weekend as clubs battled it for a place in tonight’s draw. Despite recent Covid outbreaks affecting the competition, there were plenty of memorable moments from the third round.
Aston Villa’s youngsters impressed in the defeat against Liverpool, while non-League Chorley upset Derby.
Both Villa and Derby’s first-teams were ruled out after numerous positive tests for coronavirus, with youth players taking their place.
Liverpool secured a comfortable 4-1 victory in the end, but not before a brief scare when Louie Barry scored to level proceedings at 1-1 heading into half-time.
With an average age of just 19, it was an uphill struggle for the Derby and a great leveller for Chorley.
In a theoretical upset, goals from Connor Hall and Mike Calveley gave the National League North side a 2-0 victory and a place in the fourth round draw.
West Brom and Leeds United both suffered most traditional shock exits from the FA Cup.
Sam Allardyce’s wait for a first win in charge goes on after the Baggies were dumped out by League One Blackpool, losing a penalty shoot-out 3-2.
Leeds were stunned by League Two side Crawley, who recorded an emphatic 3-0 triumph.
Tottenham avoided any such upset with a 5-0 win at eighth-tier Marine, who sit 160 places below them in the football pyramid in what was the biggest mismatch in FA Cup history.
Elsewhere, Manchester United beat Watford 1-0 while holders Arsenal progressed after extra-time against Newcastle.
