Fans agree with Peter Crouch as pundit hits out at football cancellations

Football fans have agreed with Peter Crouch following the postponement of Premier League fixtures over what would've been the best way to pay tribute to Queen Elizabeth II.

The former Liverpool and England striker took to Twitter after top-flight boss Richard Masters announced no games would take place this weekend in line with other football cancellations across the country.

Crouch tweeted to his one million followers: "I know it’s only a game and some things are much bigger but imagine all our games went ahead this weekend.

"Black armbands, silences observed, national anthem, Royal band playing etc to the millions around the world watching? Isn’t that a better send off?"

One fan said in response: "Really don't see how this isn't infinitely better."

With a second adding: "Exactly. Surely this would be better & more respectful."

A third continued: "I totally agree with this! Also how calmly Crouch makes his opinion known without going into meltdown like the rest of Twitter."

With a fourth agreeing: "We’ve missed a massive opportunity here I feel. If anything it’s made me bitter when really it should be a weekend to celebrate her life. Sad."

After a meeting between clubs on Friday morning, Premier League sides paid tribute to Elizabeth II, before it was decided that no matches would be played this weekend.

Richard Masters, Premier League chief executive, said: "We and our clubs would like to pay tribute to Her Majesty’s long and unwavering service to our country.

"As our longest-serving monarch, she has been an inspiration and leaves behind an incredible legacy following a life of dedication.

"This is a tremendously sad time for not just the nation, but also for the millions of people around the world who admired her, and we join together with all those in mourning her passing."
