Five players Man Utd could turn to after ‘pulling out’ of Declan Rice transfer

Manchester United have reportedly pulled out of the race to sign West Ham midfielder Declan Rice next summer.

West Ham have placed a £100million price tag on the shoulders of the England international, which is said to be the main reason why the Red Devils are no longer interested.

United had been firmly interested in a move for Rice all summer, but any deal failed to materialise in the window.

And according to ESPN, United are now seeking other alternatives to the West Ham ace.

With that in mind, Daily Star Sport looks at five other players the Red Devils could attempt to sign instead of Rice.

Jude Bellingham

The 18-year-old had an impressive first season at Borussia Dortmund, which ended with Bellingham being selected by Gareth Southgate for Euro 2020.

Bellingham has already started the current campaign brightly and the midfielder continues to be linked with a move to the Premier League.

The Sun say Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are in pole position to sign him and the Dortmund ace could be the perfect fit for United.

Although Bellingham has turned down a move to Old Trafford once before, he may not do so if United come knocking once more.

“Well, you know, Man United have a great squad but my decision had nothing to do with Man United,’ Bellingham told The Telegraph about why he snubbed United.

“I was so focused and so happy with the interest from Dortmund that this became my first choice.

“For me, it was Borussia Dortmund and that’s it. When you find somewhere that’s the best place to be, you kind of ignore everything else, you know what I mean?”

Yves Bissouma

The defensive midfielder continues to attract interest at Brighton, and the 25-year-old has already been linked with some of the biggest clubs in English football.

Bissouma is known for his ability to effectively press the opposition and force them into mistakes, which would be beneficial to United.

And it appears the Mali international already has the confidence he will need to succeed at a club the size of the Red Devils.

When asked who the best midfielder in the Premier League was, Bissouma told BBC Sport: “I don’t want to be arrogant, but it’s me because in my head I am working to be the best.

“So I cannot say another name, I know in the Premier League there are so many good midfielders, but for me, it’s me because that gives me the confidence and the energy to work hard to show people I am here and I am Bissouma.

“I just want to be focused on football, to play in every game, every week to be good, to help my team win and the rest we will see.”

Wilfred Ndidi

The Leicester City star is another option for Solskjaer should be decide to add a sense of grit and determination to his midfield.

The Nigeria international has been a key performer for the Foxes since joining the club in 2017 from Belgian side Genk.

And at just 24, Ndidi still has his best years in football ahead of him.

Former Tottenham striker Darren Bent has recently spoke highly of Ndidi and insisted the midfielder is good enough to play for anyone in the Premier League.

"I think he’s a top, top player," Bent told talkSPORT in August. "In terms of the holding midfield role, I think he can get into pretty much any team in the Premier League.

"I think he can easily play in any club in the Premier League in terms of the holding role."

Bent added: "Imagine he went to Manchester United. In the holding role, and then you’ve got Pogba and Fernandes.

"For me, he is brilliant. He covers the back four well, he’s good in possession, and when he has to, he makes some sneaky fouls.

"I don’t honestly understand why no one really has come for him."

Tanguy Ndombele

While Tottenham’s record signing may be a surprise name on this list, it is clear the Frenchman has all the potential he needs to succeed in the Premier League.

Ndombele showcased his ability at previous club Lyon, but unfortunately he has only been able to offer glimpses of such things in north London.

Injuries and a lack of match fitness have limited his development as a player, but he could be offered a fresh start by Solskjaer.

And it appears United are also keen on the 24-year-old, with the Express saying Spurs will offer Ndombele in a swap deal which would see Anthony Martial move in the opposite direction.

Erling Haaland

United may opt to just forget about bringing in a defensive midfielder for another summer and instead attempt to win the race to Erling Haaland.

The Dortmund ace continues to be the most talked about transfer in football and every major European club will be considering the possibility of bringing the Norwegian to their club.

The 21-year-old is expected to depart Germany next summer and has a £68m release clause in his contract.

Haaland has scored 68 goals in just 67 appearances since moving to Dortmund from Austrian champions Red Bull Salzburg in January 2020.
