Frank Lampard claims Chelsea are seeing benefits of 'big' Timo Werner decision

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard says his side are reaping the rewards of having spent a pre-season with Timo Werner after the German scored twice in a 3-0 win against Rennes at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

The former RB Leipzig forward joined the club in a £53million deal in July and he gave up the chance to play in the Champions League knockout stages with the German side in order to move to Chelsea in time for pre-season.

Given the unique nature of this season, Werner has had the luxury of a full pre-season with his new team-mates and that’s paying dividends now with the forward extending his tally for the season to seven with a brace against the Ligue 1 side.

Lampard believes Chelsea are now seeing the benefits of Werner’s decision as he’s fully integrated into the team.

‘It was Timo’s decision [to join early],’ said Lampard.

‘I haven’t broached that one with him personally. But that he could come and train with us early was a big bonus for us. That he could come and adapt to life, to the training ground, how we train, make relationships with the players.

‘We haven’t had a pre-season so we’ve had the benefit of him and Hakim having that period with us. We’re seeing Timo is fit, adapting quickly to the rigours of the Premier League, working our team out and how we want to play. It was a bonus, certainly a bonus that he could train.

‘He’s been easy for me to manage. He works well. I left him on the pitch today because I felt he had the endurance with playing 90 minutes. I’m very happy with him.’

Chelsea’s win puts them on top of their group with seven points from their opening three matches.

Tammy Abraham scored after Werner’s double to round off the win and the victory means Chelsea are unbeaten in ten matches.

‘I enjoyed it tonight and I like the sound of that,’ said Lampard.

‘It shows what we’re doing and the direction we’re going in at the moment. It was a tough game tonight. I certainly respected Rennes as an outfit. A very good team’.
