Arsenal rounded off their summer transfer window in style by sealing the signing of Atletico Madrid's Thomas Partey.
The Gunners activated the 27-year-old's £45million release clause and he passed his medical in Spain before completing the move.
However, the timing of their move so late in the window has left Atletico Madrid seething.
According to The Athletic, La Liga giants are furious and have no interest in any future dealings with the north London club. It seems they even view the relationship irreparable.
Atletico released a fairly emotionless statement on Monday evening announcing the player's departure.
"Arsenal have deposited the amount of the termination clause on behalf of the player," the club penned on their website.
"La Liga has communicated to Atletico de Madrid this Monday at 11:28 pm that representatives of Arsenal have appeared at the headquarters of the football organization in order to exercise the termination clause of the footballer Thomas Partey.
"In this way, the player has unilaterally terminated the employment contract that bound him to our club until June 30, 2023."
Atletico signed Lucas Torreira on loan but they were left with little choice given it was so late in the window.
Arsenal, however, got their man and speaking after the deal was confirmed, Mikel Arteta seemed a happy boss.
“We have been watching Thomas for a while, so we’re now delighted to add such a high quality player to our squad," the Gunners boss said.
"He is a dynamic midfielder with great energy. He brings a lot of experience from a top club that has competed at the highest level in La Liga and the Champions League for several years.
"We’re very impressed with his attitude and his approach to the game.
"He’s an intelligent footballer and we’re looking forward to him integrating into our system and contributing to the progress we’re building at the moment at the club.”
