Gareth Bale to play golf at Ryder Cup just months after retiring from football

Golf lover Gareth Bale will be in action at the Ryder Cup – just months after retiring from football.

The former Real Madrid and Tottenham star’s passion for golf is well known, and he now has more time to hone his game after hanging up his boots shortly after leading Wales at the World Cup in Qatar.

He will return to the sporting limelight at another world-renowned event later this month when he takes part in a celebrity All-Star Match, which will be followed by the main event itself between Europe and the USA at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club near Rome.

Bale won’t be the only big name from the world of sport taking part as tennis icon Novak Djokovic, former Ukraine striker Andriy Shevchenko and Ferrari F1 star Carlos Sainz will also be in the Italian capital.

Ten celebrities have been split into two teams of five with each side captained by golf legends Colin Montgomerie and Corey Pavin. Bale, who will be in Montgomerie’s team, is no stranger to golf competition having played at the PGA Pebble Beach Pro-Am earlier this year.

Bale said: “The Ryder Cup is a special event, having experienced the incredible atmosphere at Europe’s win in 2010, I can’t wait to experience some of that magic again in Rome in a few weeks’ time.

“The All-Star Match, under the captaincy of Colin Montgomerie, will be an amazing experience and I’m really looking forward to teeing it up with some great people. It’s sure to be a top event and one the fans will really enjoy.”

The event takes place two days before the start of the Ryder Cup when Europe will look to regain the trophy after being hammered by the US two years ago.
