BBC presenter Gary Lineker mocked Sky Sports on Twitter over an error they made in a graphic while comparing Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Monday Night Football pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher were involved in a heated discussion over which of the two players should be considered the greatest of all time.
Neville was adament that Ronaldo, who recently re-joined his beloved Manchester United, should be seen as the best footballer in history.
Carragher, however, argued that legendary Argentinean Messi was more deserving of the honour.
During their discussion, Sky displayed a graphic which took a look at both star’s achivements throughout their illustrious careers.
However, while it showed that Ronaldo had won two international trophies with Portugal, it stated that Messi had not won any with Argentina.
This is despite the fact that as a recently as July the six-time Ballon d’Or winner helped inspire his country to the Copa America.
And Lineker made fun of this by posting the graphic along with the sarcastic-laden caption: “To be fair, it’s such a long time since Messi led Argentina to victory in Copa America, they’re entitled to forget it”, along with a confused face emoji.
Lineker has regularly spoken out about his love for Messi, and penned a lengthy article for BBC Sport last year expressing his huge admiration for the 34-year-old.
“Every time I watch him, even on his quiet days, there are moments when you just go ‘how does he do that?'” he said. “He does things three or four times in one game that I probably never managed once in my entire career. He does things no-one else can.
“It’s Ronaldo that most people seem to compare Messi to now, not (Diego) Maradona. People get very tribal in all sorts of ways in life, and Messi versus Ronaldo is one of them.
“Often the choice seems to come down to whether you support Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus or whoever, which is fine – I understand that.
“I am a huge fan of Ronaldo too, but if you’re talking about the best player ever, there shouldn’t even be a debate that it is Messi. That’s just my opinion, but it’s not even close for me.
“Some people level it against Messi that his achievements have all come with Barca while Ronaldo has won titles in different countries, but I find that suggestion a strange one.”
It remains to be seen which of the two players adds more trophies to their ridiculous hauls this season.
United fans will be desperately hoping Ronaldo can lead them to their first piece of silverware since the Europa League in 2017.
Messi, meanwhile, is likely to win Ligue 1 with Paris Saint-Germain, but will be aware that he is expected to lead them to Champions League success too.
Whatever the case, their credentials in the GOAT battle will no doubt be debated for years and years to come.
