Gundogan mocked for Liverpool penalty as City’s spot-kick struggles continue

Ilkay Gundogan has been mocked on social media for his horrendous penalty miss against Liverpool.

Manchester City were awarded a spot kick mid-way through the first half after Fabinho fouled Raheem Sterling in the box.

With Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne both unavailable, Gundogan stepped up to take the penalty with the score at 0-0

The German midfielder approached the ball confidently but got too much on the kick and blazed it way over Alisson's bar.

Sterling, Gundogan and De Bruyne have now all missed penalties in the Premier League for Pep Guardiola's men this season.

While City's tally of three missed spot-kicks is the highest of any team in the top-flight during the 2020-21 campaign.

Guardiola might not have seen the funny side on the touchline, but plenty of Twitter users did.

One commented how Gundogan took the penalty 'as though it was a free kick.'

Another joked about how they had 'just caught that [Gundogan's] penalty in my living room.'

Others drew comparisons with the Six Nations and suggested that the 30-year-old midfielder has just 'completed his conversion.'

Manchester City have experienced something of a penalty curse against Liverpool in recent times.

Riyad Mahrez fluffed his lines from the spot against the Reds when the sides met back in October 2019.

While Belgian playmaker De Bruyne failed to convert from 12 yards in the reverse fixture at the Etihad last October.
