Haaland took on Ronaldo’s intense diet to become Dortmund powerhouse

Borussia Dortmund forward Erling Haaland is one of the most prolific goalscorers in world football at the moment and inspired his side to a 3-2 win over Sevilla in the first leg of their Champions League tie on Wednesday.

Haaland assisted Mahmoud Dahoud's goal and scored a brace, to take his tally to 25 goals and seven assists in 24 appearances in all competitions so far this season.

The 20-year-old is attracting interest from virtually every major European club and, although his idol is Zlatan Ibrahimovic, he has taken inspiration from Cristiano Ronaldo 's dedication and work ethic.

Speaking to ESPN back in 2019, his father Alf-Inge Haaland revealed he took inspiration from a story Patrice Evra told about having lunch with Ronaldo.

"Erling has always been talented," the former Leeds United and Manchester City player said. "You see lots of talented young players, but not all of them have the determination.

"I have always seen hunger in Erling. From a young age, 11 or 12, he would go out on his own to an indoor hall, practice his skills and play against older boys.

"He always had that inner will to make himself better. Maybe that is what he inherited from me, because I never had his talent.

"I had to be determined to make it in the game. But Erling made all the sacrifices, leaving home at 16 to move to Molde, and he is a lot more professional than I was.

"He was told a story by Patrice Evra about a lunch he had with Ronaldo and Cristiano had fish, nothing else. Erling now tries to do the same things because Ronaldo is 34 and still at the top of the game, so it shows the value of doing the right things."

According to Spanish publication AS, Ronaldo's diet consists of six separate meals and it is principally based around protein and carbohydrates, such as pasta and chicken which are cooked without seasoning or oil.
