Harry Maguire ‘on top’ of captaincy role as Man Utd push for Premier League title

Man Utd: Solskjaer says Maguire goal wrongly ruled out

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire is “on top” of his role as club captain, according to Sam Homewood. Maguire joined United back in the summer of 2019 in an £80million deal from Leicester City. United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was “impressed by his leadership skills” and made the centre-back his new club captain in January 2020.

Homewood, who joined MUTV as a presenter in 2018 and now also co-hosts the club’s official podcast, UTD Podcast, believes Solskjaer made the appointment to signal a new era at Old Trafford.

“I guess that was Ole wanting to say, ‘This is a new team now, this is my team, we’re going to change direction’,” Homewood told Express Sport.

“So in a way, it made a lot of season to have someone who hadn’t been there that long as captain because it was a restart.”

Maguire’s role as a leader is still questioned by fans and pundits, despite being an ever-present figure in the side.

The 27-year-old is yet to miss a Premier League game since joining the Red Devils.

Homewood, though, believes Maguire is more than fulfilling his captaincy duties.

“His leadership has been questioned a lot, especially from pundits and stuff,” said Homewood.

“Actually, I think they don’t know what’s happening behind the scenes.

“Talking to him, you realise he’s on top of it.

“When he joined the club, he went around and met every department so knows everyone at the club now and that’s what you want from your captain.

“It’s not just about screaming at everybody in the changing room. I know that’s what people want but there’s more to being a leader than that.

“Harry’s doing so much work that people don’t see and don’t want to see.”

United’s Premier League title bid suffered a bit of setback in the shock home defeat against Sheffield United last month.

After going 1-0 behind, Maguire’s header from Alex Telles’ corner levelled the match before Oliver Burke found the winner.

Homewood said: “I think he’s in one of those unfortunate situations where due to a transfer fee that had absolutely nothing to do with him, people will point at him and look for faults.

“He’s having a great season and he just looks so comfortable, especially when the ball’s in the air, he just seems to win every header.

“And I don’t think anyone watching [the Sheffield United game] would be surprised that he scored from Telles’ corner.

“When Telles started putting crosses in in his debut against PSG, I thought as soon Harry Maguire plays with Telles we’re going score goals from corners.”
